Better Soil Fertility Frees Up Nutrients and reduces the need for nitrogen.
We would rather have good fertility than throw N at everything. If you get the soil fertility right, it should make everything in the soil work together better. Without it, some fertilizer is wasted.
Our Process So Far
2021
Bought the dirt. Shredded Weeds.
2022
Cleared Brush in many areas. Shredded Weeds. Baled Hay where we could. Initial soil tests—sent to Texas A&M. Started on a plan.
2023
Soil Tests on one acre grids. Composite soil samples (5-8 samples from a one acre area, mixed together).
Sent soil samples to test at Midwest Labs in St. Louis.
Developed a plan for all hay ground to increase fertility as shown below (source in parens): N (Urea) , P & N (DAP), K (Potash), Zn (Zinc Sulfate), S (Zinc Sulfate + elemental S), B (elemental Boron).
2024
Turbotilled 200 Acres; Applied the prescribed nutrients in March 2024; Turbotilled in the nutrients; Sprigged Coastal (110 acres); Applied pre-emergent.
Baled Old Fields in July 2024; all existing and newly sprigged Coastal fields in October 2024.
2025
Will Apply Herbicide + N Spring; to repeat Soil Fertility Tests in December.
Give us a try. The hay will only get better in the future.
